The series is called “Under the Hood,” as in “let’s look under the hood and see how this thing runs.” Editor Joyce Moed will closely examine some very significant companies, beginning with CUNA Mutual Group (front cover and page 8) to learn what makes them tick. My very first credit union conversation occurred more than 20 years ago, and it involved CUNA Mutual Group. We were getting ready to launch a prototype of Credit Union Times to showcase the new publication, and I called CMG to ask for ad materials to run in it for free to give the industry and advertisers a virtual “test drive” of the new publication.
I spoke on the phone with a man named Gene Schomburg, who was as friendly and accommodating as can be. Gene said, “sure,” and we became close friends for a long time. That was my introduction to credit unions and CUNA Mutual. It was a very positive experience–the first of many.
